The Importance of Drainage Part Two: Sink Drains

by | Nov 26, 2019

In our last blog, Sarkinen Plumbing looked at what to do about problems with bathtub drainage. For our second and final installment in this two-part blog series on the importance of drainage, we’re going to talk about sink drains.

Why Are Slow Sinks Bad?

From your bathroom to your kitchen, slow sinks aren’t something any homeowner wants to deal with. Dirty sink drains are not just an inconvenience, but can also cause bacteria to grow, which may pose a serious health risk for you and your family. That’s why it’s important to eliminate sink clogs and force your drains to flow at a normal speed again ASAP.

Bathroom and kitchen sinks both go through a lot of wear and tear over the years. In your bathroom, soap scum and hair can create serious blockages, and cause your drains to become corroded. There’s also the bacteria factor to consider, as it is unsanitary to wash your hands, clean your face, and brush your teeth in a dirty sink. In your kitchen, clogs may form because of food remnants, grease, and oils. When it comes to the kitchen sink, it’s important you avoid putting fibrous and starchy foods, fruit peels and rinds, as well as any other tough materials down your garbage disposal.

When Should I Call for Sink Drain Service?

Even if your sink is not fully obstructed, a partial blockage can cause your drains to move slower as well. Backed up sinks can also lead to breakages and overflowing, so you should always be on the lookout for sink drainage issues. At Sarkinen Plumbing, we recommend using a sink or even flange plunger (toilet plunger) to get rid of tough sink clogs. You may also be able to reduce blockages by pouring some hot water down your drains, followed by baking soda and vinegar, and then flushing it all out. You should NOT, however, rely on chemical drain cleaners for tough clogs, as the toxic chemicals in these cleaners are likely to cause your pipes and drains to break down even more in the long-run.

However, the best way to strengthen sink drainage over time is to call a professional. At Sarkinen Plumbing, our skilled Vancouver plumbers offer drain cleaning to eliminate even the toughest clogs, and remove obstructions from deep within your plumbing system.

Call an experienced drain plumber if your drains are slow and:

  • There is a nasty smell coming from your drains: Strange smells wafting from your drains is a strong sign that you may have a sewage problem or other back-up in your pipes. Call a plumber right away if you notice this in your home, as buildups like this can be seriously hazardous.
  • There are strange sounds coming from your drains: Bubbling or gurgling sounds coming out of your drains are another common sign of a clog, and taken in conjunction with slow drains, mark a strong reason to call for service.
  • There is standing water in your sink/sinks: Standing water is an almost surefire sign of a clog, and if you find this is happening in your sinks, you should call a skilled drain technician ASAP.
